Editor's Note
The Golden Horn (Haliç) is an inlet on the European side of Istanbul, at the entrance to the Bosphorus, separating the historic peninsula from the Beyoğlu plateau. It formed where the sea flooded part of a river valley reaching it. Because of its importance to the city, since Ottoman times the name has denoted not only the waterway but also the surrounding urban area of many neighbourhoods.
