The ruins of the castle are found on steep slopes to the east of Yukarıkale village. The castle was built by Uzun Hasan. Evliya Çelebi also mentions Koyulhisar Castle. According to him, inside the castle there were 100 houses, a granary, an arsenal, water cisterns and an iron gate. He notes that below there was a town with a mosque and shops.
