Located in the part of the Hasanpaşa district known as Uzunçayır, within the Kadıköy Greek Orthodox cemetery, this church is dedicated to Saint Ignatius. In 1864, after the decision was taken to move burial grounds outside residential areas, the Greek community of Kadıköy, together with other minority communities, was allotted nearly 10,000 square metres of land in Uzunçayır. Permission to build a church on the allotted land was granted in 1898. Pavlos Maksurof, then First Secretary of the Russian Embassy, personally saw to obtaining the necessary construction permit.
