Editor's Note
The school moved into this building, erected in 1883 by French nuns who came to Üsküdar, and closed in 1924. After that it became private property and was converted into an apartment block, meeting the housing needs of the crowded new families arriving in the intense rural-to-urban migration after 1950. Having never been repaired and badly misused, it was thoroughly worn down by 1967, and in 1994 the last five remaining families abandoned it. In 2008 the interior of the building, by then occupied by glue-sniffers, collapsed.
