Editor's Note
Chalcedon was the first colony founded by settlers from Megara during the Great Colonization period, established before Byzantion. There is a well-known anecdote that Megabazos, one of the commanders of the Persian king Darius I, described it as the "land of the blind" by comparison with the Byzantion peninsula. The presumed settlement area lay between Himeros (Ayrılık Suyu) to the north and the Chalcedon Stream (Kurbağalıdere) to the southeast, and can be thought to include today's market district. It is believed that the city contained agoras, harbours, temples, theatres and walls.
