Editor's Note
In the statue made in 1973 by the sculptor Kenan Yontunç, the young woman on its right side is the ceramic artist Lerzan Öke, who in 1959 opened the first ceramics exhibition in the world since antiquity. The base of the monument is ringed with stone reliefs depicting the people of Anatolia in the early Republican period and the War of Independence. On 24 June 2022 it was taken in for maintenance and repair by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
