Editor's Note
Built in the reign of Abdülhamid II, with construction completed between 1899 and 1902 together with its water channels and connections, the structure is called the Hamidiye Water Gauge. It actually served less as a water gauge than as a water tower; that is, it was intended to measure the flow rate of the water, control its volume, and raise the water coming from the Cendere Pumping Station to a suitable height so as to deliver it to the Balmumcu reservoir and meet the water needs of Yıldız Palace. The tower, whose Gothic-style spire seen in early-1900s photographs is no longer in place, stands 8.75 meters high from the ground.
