Editor's Note
The Etz Ahayim Synagogue, also known as the Ortakoy Synagogue, stands in Ortakoy near the foot of the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul. The original building's date is unknown but is estimated to predate 1703, and for over a century it also housed an academy. It was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1941, with only its marble Aron Kodesh left intact, and was subsequently rebuilt.
