Editor's Note
In the 17th century the area where the buildings stand was known as the Kazancıoğlu Garden. After the 17th century it was continually furnished with new structures. It took on a new identity with the Çırağan Palace, whose construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1867. Some of the buildings the school occupies are among the annexes (the Imperial Kitchen and Imperial Stables buildings) of the Çırağan Palace, which stretched from Beşiktaş to Ortaköy. These structures took their share of damage in the Çırağan Palace fire of 1910. Until the Republican era there was no public school in our country to train seamen for merchant ships.
