Editor's Note
The history of the Kandilli Observatory in Üsküdar dates back to a meteorological observation station established in 1868 on a hill 74 metres high in Pera. The 1894 earthquake was a turning point for the observatory. Abdülhamid II, who wanted the major earthquake that struck Istanbul to be studied scientifically, had two seismographs purchased from Italy at 3,200 francs each for this purpose. One of the seismographs was installed at the Rasathane-i Amire (Imperial Observatory) and the other at Yıldız Palace.
