Editor's Note
Süreyya İlmen Pasha, who in 1953 also commissioned the Süreyya Opera House and Yoğurtçu Park in Kadıköy and the Süreyyapaşa Hospital and Süreyya Beach in Maltepe, took inspiration from similar structures in Europe and from Greek mythology to build, on a rock about 50 m off Süreyya Beach, the Temple of the Virgins, with six columns, 3.5 m in diameter and 4 m high, placing a statue of Venus inside it. Over time, however, as the sea was filled in, the monument ended up far inland beside the main road within a car park, or was relocated. The fate of the Venus statue is unknown.
