Editor's Note
The Kınalıada Christ Greek Orthodox Monastery sits on the island's southern hill, commanding a striking view across to both the Thracian and Anatolian sides of Istanbul. According to historical records, the monastery was founded in the 11th century by Romanos Diogenes (1030-1072), on a site that had previously held the tomb of the deposed Emperor Leo V (775-820). A few years after its founding, in the wake of the defeat at Manzikert (1071), Romanos Diogenes himself was overthrown, made a monk, and exiled to the very monastery he had built, after being blinded.
