Built by Basil the Macedonian and renovated in 1063, the monastery's existence is first attested by a document dated 1158. Murad IV had the monastery demolished by edict (1623-1640) after fires lit in the church on a feast day were mistaken for an actual fire. A church was built here in 1868 and was repaired in 1908. The church's feast day is 6 August.
