Editor's Note

The monastery (Hagios Georgios tou Kremnou) is a pink-coloured complex on the southern shore of the town (the slope facing Büyükada), just beyond the Naval High School Officers' Club. The epithet 'tou Kremnou,' or 'of the cliff,' in the monastery's name comes from its having been built on a sea-facing cliff. Above the blue Marmara, the setting amid the pines, cypresses and other trees surrounding the monastery's enchanting buildings is very beautiful; here you meet a view reminiscent of the Greek islands of the Aegean. The monastery is thought to have been built between 1583 and 1593.
