Editor's Note
Construction was first begun in 1840 to house the bachelor workers of the Imperial Rifle Factory (Tüfekhane-i Amire). Completed in 1843 by Garabet Amira Balyan, it was turned into a barracks. Renovated in 1857, it was allotted to the Palace Servants (Hademe-i Hassa) and the Imperial Band (Mızıka-ı Hümayun). In 1862 Sarkis Balyan rebuilt it in masonry rather than timber. Damaged in the fire of 1909, the building was given to the Engineering School in 1918, after which the British occupation took place. In a fire in 1920 its street-facing section burned down entirely. After repair and renovation work in 1923, the Engineering School moved back into the building.
