Editor's Note
Built in 1797 (AH 1212). The inscription, by Sünbülzade Vehbi, reads: Praise be to God, with the surging grace of the Valide Sultan, the thirsty of the world were sated with bounty; the merciful Lord made her lofty new conduit the source of pure, sweet Euphrates water; from it she also set water flowing for Fatma Sultan; behold this new fountain made to run by that benevolent one; whoever drinks its water, sweet as sugar, finds it brings peace to the heart; could the sherbet of rock candy ever give such delight? May this fount of delicate temperament be a stream of the milk of paradise…
