İbrahim Şinasi Mezarı

Editor's Note

This grave belongs to İbrahim Şinasi, a pioneering Ottoman intellectual, author, journalist, poet and playwright. Regarded as the founder of Turkish dramaturgy, he wrote one of the earliest examples of an Ottoman play, encouraged the translation of poetry from French into Turkish, and simplified the script used for Ottoman Turkish. Through his newspapers Tercüman-ı Ahvâl and Tasvîr-i Efkâr, he promoted the spread of European Enlightenment ideals during the Tanzimat period.
