This was the section, now corresponding to the Taksim and Gümüşsuyu areas, of a great cemetery that began at Taksim and descended all the way to Dolmabahçe and Fındıklı. It takes its name from Ayas Paşa, one of Süleyman the Magnificent's grand viziers, whose grave lies in the burial ground of the Eyüp Sultan Mosque. The cemetery grounds had once belonged to the Ayas Paşa Foundation (established 1526), and the Ayas Paşa Mansion stood in this vicinity.
