Editor's Note
Uncovered and published by Demangel and Mamboury, the cistern consists of a total of 12 columns arranged in 2 rows. The column capitals are of the Ionic type with imposts. In a 1980 study of the now-inaccessible cistern, Hülya Tezcan noted that its entrance was filled with earth and that it was being used as a waste dump. As the building complex to which the cistern belonged was commissioned by Emperor Constantine Monomachos (1042-1055), it is thought to date to the 11th century.
