The Şehit Muhtar Bey Girls' Model School once stood in the Kılıçali Paşa neighbourhood between Susam Street and Kumrulu Street, but today only its empty plot remains. With the First World War, foreign schools were closed and state schools were moved into their buildings; the first such step came in 1915, when the building of the Saint Barthélemy French Seminary in Taksim was allotted to the Cihangir Girls' School, and the school was named by the Education Directorate after Şehit Muhtar Bey, an officer of the Action Army (Hareket Ordusu) who was killed on 13 April 1909, during the fighting in Taksim in the events known as the 31 March Incident, while resisting the artillery troops.
