Editor's Note

This private medical institution on Sıraselviler Avenue in Taksim was founded on 6 April 1846 on the recommendation of Dr Georg Hermann Ritter von Mühling (1826-1907), one of the physicians of the Prussian Embassy, with the support of the German D.W.V Charitable Society in Istanbul. The land and building required for the hospital were provided by the Community of German Protestant Churches. Opening on Sıraselviler with only five beds, the hospital soon proved unable to meet demand, and in November of the same year a larger house was rented.
