Editor's Note

Known to have been built in the 19th century, the structure was marked as the 'Mavrogordato Mansion' on the Beyoğlu map drawn up during the 1858 survey by G. d'Ostoya, an engineer of the Cadastral Office of the 6th Municipal District. In 1893 it was purchased by Selim Melhame Paşa and his family and used as a residence. From 1908 it functioned first for commercial purposes and then as the building of the Danish Legation. Registered in the title deeds in the name of Selim Melhame's wife, Aimé Crespin, the building was purchased by the Ministry of Education in 1932 and has continued to be used for educational purposes to the present day.
