Editor's Note
Byzantium (Bizantion) was the ancient Greek city that later became Constantinople and, in modern times, Istanbul. It stood at the eastern tip of the historic peninsula, between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara at the southwestern entrance of the Bosphorus, where Topkapı Palace stands today. According to legend it was colonized by Greeks from Megara in the 7th century BCE, taking its name from King Byzas. It remained primarily Greek-speaking until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in 1453.
