Editor's Note
During the cholera epidemic that struck Istanbul in 1893, it was decided to open three disinfection houses in the city. One of these, the Tophane Disinfection House, entered service in 1894. Closed before 1980, the disinfection house was completely ruined by a fire. In 1991 it was converted into a neighbourhood community centre through a renovation that did not follow its original form. Today the building serves as the Beyoğlu Centre for the Disabled. (2020)
