Editor's Note
Rebuilt after its destruction in the late 2nd century, the structure reached its most magnificent form in the mid-4th century. It was restored following the Nika Revolt of the 6th century. Around the 8th century it also began to be used as a silk workshop. Later, almost until the period of the Palaiologos dynasty, parts of the building were used as a prison. The remains uncovered during the 1927-1928 excavations were documented and then reburied under earth for protection.
