Editor's Note
This new Sublime Porte (Bâb-ı âli), built by Stefan Kalfa, differs from its predecessors in being of masonry construction, save for its floor decking. Although various alterations and demolitions have been carried out on it, the main lines laid down by the architect still stand. However, the old spatial layout has been preserved only on the side of the former Grand Vizier's Office, which is used today as the Provincial Government House. In its original form the building consisted of rooms arranged around broad halls, linked to one another along a northwest-southeast axis. At the two ends of these roughly 220-metre-long sections were low blocks, with a tall block in the middle.
