Editor's Note
Because it stands near the Istanbul governor's building at Bâbıâli, it is known as the Bâbıâli Mosque or, after its founder, the İmam Ali Mosque; yet owing to horseshoe-shaped marks once found on its minaret base, it is popularly known as the Nallı Mescid ("Horseshoe Mosque"). For sources and detailed information, see: Enis Karakaya, DİA, "Nallı Mescid."
