Editor's Note
The modernization of Istanbul's harbours emerged in the second half of the 19th century as a result of steam shipping, accelerated by the Industrial Revolution, and the growth of Eastern Mediterranean trade. With railway construction beginning in the Ottoman Empire in 1854, the ports' links to their hinterland grew stronger, increasing the need for modern quays and harbour facilities. In this process the shores of Galata, Eminönü and Haydarpaşa became the principal zones of transformation, and the quay works took on an institutional framework, particularly with the concessions granted in 1890 and 1899.
