This is the remains of a Byzantine-period cistern uncovered during a foundation excavation carried out on Nuruosmaniye Avenue under the supervision of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums between 21 and 28 March 1980. The cistern's interior walls were coated with waterproof plaster. A column and a column shaft were also identified to the east of the cistern. In addition, the remains of a smaller rectangular cistern were found in the southern part of the excavated parcel. Their upper coverings were destroyed during construction, and nothing of these cisterns survives today.
