Editor's Note
Eminönü is one of Istanbul's busiest spots. It is easily reached by ferry, tram, bus and, more recently, the Marmaray. Coming by private car, however, is a problem. Although there are plenty of car parks nearby, finding a space can be impossible, especially on Saturdays. When we say Eminönü we are really talking about a wider range of neighbourhoods: we usually include Tahtakale, Bahçekapı, Mahmutpaşa, Mercan and Sirkeci as well. The undisputed symbol of Eminönü is the New Mosque. We will visit this mosque first. We all know the people who scatter feed to the pigeons around the steps at the entrance to its courtyard.
