Editor's Note
The American Bible Society began its work in the Ottoman Empire in 1828. From the very year it became active, it carried out numerous Bible distribution efforts. Their total spending between 1828 and 1915 amounted to $3,805,000. They occupied the buildings they used as tenants and acquired no property. They ran printing operations in Istanbul and Beirut. Istanbul became the society's new regional centre. They even came into competition with the British and Foreign Bible Society.
