Editor's Note
In this mosque - completed in 1577-78 as the charitable foundation of the grand vizier who gave it his name - Sinan applied a central plan supported by eight piers. Because the barracks of the naval azebs (light infantry) stood beside it, the mosque also came to be known as the "Azeb Kapısı / Azapkapı Mosque." Standing outside the Galata walls on a plot created by filling in the Golden Horn, the mosque rests on piles driven into the ground and on vaulted cellars. Source: Baha Tanman, "III."
