Editor's Note
The mosque and the adjacent madrasa, built in the 16th century, are said to have been commissioned from the architect Mimar Sinan in that same century. The building, known to have been repaired in 1845, was reduced to ruins in the 1911 Aksaray Fire. It was built on land granted by Suleiman the Magnificent to Şeyh Mehmed, known as Hekimçelebi. The mosque served as the masjid of the Naqshbandi lodge that Hekimçelebi, who himself is buried in the Şeyh Vefa cemetery, founded here. It is reported that when the buildings of Istanbul University were constructed, the lodge's land was also absorbed into the university.
