Editor's Note
This is a Byzantine-period vaulted substructure remnant uncovered in 1988 during the foundation excavation for a hotel. An examination of the site by the Istanbul Archaeology Museums found a partially destroyed Byzantine-period cistern. The cistern, which could not be examined in detail because of the risk of collapse, was eliminated when the excavation pit was filled with a concrete retaining wall without documentation, owing to that very danger. 1
