Editor's Note
According to historical records, after the conquest of the city the saddlers of Istanbul worked for about twenty years in a temporary arcade next to the old bedesten (Cevahir Bedesteni). After the Fatih Mosque was built on one of the city's prized and lofty hilltops, the Saraçhane was constructed nearby—on the empty land now occupied by the Fatih Municipality building, Fatih Park, and the surrounding apartment blocks—in order to settle the saddlers there. Completed in 1475, this market was attached to the Hagia Sophia endowment. According to the records, the Saddlers' Market comprised 116 shops. It was one of the oldest and most important markets in Istanbul.
