Editor's Note
The outer courtyard gate known as the Çorba Kapısı (Soup Gate) is a superb work, crowned on both sides with seven lobes each and a finial, and decorated on its inner face with green stone inlay. The collapse of most of the mosque's great courtyard walls and the complete disappearance over time of the other gates have eliminated all the examples to which it could be compared. Today there is no equivalent of the Çorba Kapısı's decoration; however, the Rumi-style illumination on its pediments can be encountered in certain stone or wood carvings, tiles, painted decorations, and the art of bookbinding.
