The synagogue, which survived the fire of 1663, was sold by the Romaniote Jews to the Sephardic Jews through the mediation of Chief Rabbi David Elnekave. Source: Synagogues of Istanbul, Naim Güleryüz, p.14, 1991. For a time it was used as the courthouse of the chief rabbinate.
