Editor's Note
The synagogue, which fell into ruin in a fire, was renewed by a decree of 1694 and, according to a traveler named Steiner, was repaired in 1709 and 1823. The date 5641 (1881) read on its entrance door marks an important restoration. It was partially repaired in 1936 and 1955; during the restoration, the ceiling's original decorations were uncovered. On 18 May 1977, a prayer ceremony was held in honor of the victory of the Ottoman army that fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, attended by Grand Vizier İbrahim Edhem Pasha and senior statesmen. The last wedding held in the synagogue was on 8 October 1961.
