Editor's Note
The Yavuz Sultan Selim (Sultan Selim) Medrese in Istanbul was built by Mimar Sinan in memory of Selim I between 1548 and 1550. Also known as the Yenibahçe Selim Medrese, it is said to stand where Selim's tent had been pitched, on the spot where he wished to found an educational institution. In 1563, at the request of the local population, Mimar Sinan converted its lecture hall into a small mosque and added a minaret. Over the years the building survived fires, was used as a public kitchen, and in 1962 opened as the Turkish Calligraphy Art Museum.
