Editor's Note
İpek Bodrum is a cistern located in the northwest of Constantinople, a short distance from the Cistern of Aetius. İpek Bodrum was probably part of a monastery that also included the nearby Kasım Ağa Mosque and Odalar Mosque. Although its construction date is uncertain, it may date to the 12th century. In the 19th century İpek Bodrum was used by Armenian thread-spinners, which gave it its name ("İpek Bodrum" meaning "Silk Cellar"). It was damaged in a fire that broke out in 1919 and afterwards became almost entirely filled with refuse and rubble. It now lies buried beneath Kurtağa Park.
