This first bastion of the Sur-i Sultani is part of the wall system that enclosed Topkapı Palace in the Ottoman period, in the 15th century. Guarding the palace complex founded by Mehmed the Conqueror, these walls drew a boundary separating the palace from the city. The bastion marks where Istanbul's Ottoman defensive and palace architecture meet.
