Editor's Note
Built in the 4th century CE during the reign of the 63rd Roman emperor Julian, the harbor was an artificial port located in Istanbul's Kumkapı quarter, near the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus (the Little Hagia Sophia Mosque). In historical sources the harbor is referred to by the names Julian, Portus Novus, Sophia, and, in the Ottoman period, Kadırga Harbor. In the 6th century it was renamed the Harbor of Sophia and remained the city's main port until foreign trade activity emerged on the Golden Horn in the 11th century. It is known to have still been in use during the Fourth Crusade in 1204.
