Editor's Note
In 1907 the Bulgarian priest Exarch Joseph bought this building from Maksut Bey, and the Bulgarian Church community center in Ortaköy thus moved to Şişli. As early as 1871 Istanbul had become the headquarters of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, with the seat later moved to Sofia. Inside the building of the Bulgarian Church community, known as the Exarchate, in addition to Exarch Joseph's room preserved in its original state, the famous Firman by which Abdülaziz declared the Bulgarians a separate ethnic group and a separate Bulgarian Church is also kept hanging on the wall.
