The school's origins trace back to 1849 in Beyoğlu. In its first year the school had thirty-one students, nineteen of them English and twelve from other nationalities. Alongside English teachers, lessons were also given by Turkish teachers. Sultan Abdülhamid II granted the British Embassy a plot of land in Firuzağa for the school.
