Editor's Note
The mansion of Marko Pasha (Portakaloğlu Aleksia), a Cretan Greek merchant close to Sultan Abdülhamid II, was vacated in 1922 when the family emigrated to Greece after the Balkan Wars. After standing empty for a time, the building was later used as the Polish Consulate. Following the founding of the Republic, it was transferred to the Treasury in 1927 and allocated as the Governor's Residence. The street it stands on is today named Vali Konağı Avenue.
