Editor's Note
It was commissioned in 1786 by Nakşidil Valide Sultan as a public square fountain with a prayer platform. Nakşidil Valide Sultan was the wife of Sultan Abdülhamid I and the mother of Sultan Mahmud II. The building inscription reads: Abdülhamid Han, fortunate one of the face of the earth, whose command the people of the world obey like flowing water; the morning sun is a golden basin at the fountain of his bounty, the radiant moon a silver vessel at the spring of his justice.
