Editor's Note
This tavern opened in 1946. It was founded by Madam Despina of Gökçeada, Turkey's first female tavern proprietor. The tavern moved to its location at the Kurtuluş last stop in 1970, and from 1990 it was run by Madam Despina's partner; in 1998 the Tekin brothers took it over. Before she died in 2006, Madam Despina left instructions to Ercan Tekin that the tavern's authentic character be preserved. The establishment carries on in its authentic, rough-and-ready form, with its own distinctive traditions.
