Editor's Note
The Okmeydanı Gunpowder Works was built in 1578. Production ceased after a fire that broke out in 1596 and caused loss of life, and the works came back into use in 1792 under the name of the Naval Cartridge Factory. The building, which was damaged in the great earthquake of 1896 in Istanbul, is said to have most recently belonged to the Northern Naval Area Command in the 1920s.
