Editor's Note
According to the endowment deed of Piyale Paşa, in the 16th century the area where the mosque was built was occupied by market gardens; the gardens that remained after the construction of the complex were used as revenue-bearing property during and after its building. The 6.5-decare market garden surviving today is the last remnant of these gardens. It is the last example in Istanbul of the garden-mosque pairing known to us from the account books of the Fatih and Süleymaniye Mosques. The garden contains a well and a pool as architectural elements of Ottoman agricultural technology.
