Editor's Note

The building was constructed in 1846 as a boarding school under the name Maison du Saint Esprit by Monsignor Hillerau, the Vatican's representative in Istanbul. In 1856 the management changed and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion took it over, and the school began to serve as a girls' college and an orphanage. During the First World War the French nuns left the country and the school closed. After its closure, the building served various functions, including an engineering school and a hospital. The school reopened in 1919.
